On Top of the World, East of Stanley
Stanley is known for breathtaking views of alpine lakes, picturesque mountain ranges and never-ending valleys. One of my favorite spots, discovered on a recent camping trip, is Basin Butte Fire Lookout.
Get Out of Town
From Stanley, head east on ID-21 for 4.5 miles. When you come to NF-653, make a right. Follow NF-653 until it intersects Nip Tuck Rd. Make a left to stay on NF-653. The next intersection will be for Basin Butte Road. Make a left, and cruise up the mountain for about 7 miles. Keep in mind cell phone reception seems to be non-existent in this part of the world.
What to Expect
Basin Butte Road is well-maintained. It starts out fairly flat and climbs a steep mountain side. High clearance vehicles are not necessary for the climb. Four wheel drive could make life a little less stressful on certain secitons. Keep in mind that I ran this trial in June, so snow was not a factor. Elk Mountain will grab your attention on the way up - its majestic appeal increasing the farther up you go. If you look attentively, Stanley Lake can be seen off in the distance.
Eyes on the Prize
Most of the trail is wide enough for two vehicles. Some skill will be required along the narrow sections. If you stay the course you will be greeted by epic 360-degree views. Sadly there are large portions of beetle ravaged forest - still beautiful none the less. About 7 miles in you will catch a glimpse of the Basin Butte Fire Lookout. Be sure to take note of excitement levels at this point and keep trekking!
You Have Arrived at Your Destination
Once there, you will see why this is "the spot". There are unobstructed views in every direction for miles. At the tallest point of the lookout you will find a small structure designed for living quarters - a great place to soak up the natural beauty.
Before you head back down, be sure to take an obligatory photo in the outhouse. It might just have the best restroom view in the world. Yes, toilet paper was available.
